Exploring This Small Town Park In Oregon Is The Definition Of An Underrated Adventure

Sometimes the best adventures happen in our own backyards. That's precisely the appeal of McClure Park, a tiny neighborhood park in Astoria, Oregon. The one-acre park is located just one block south of the downtown district on the corner of Franklin Avenue and Eighth Street. Before I take you there, I recommend a downtown stop beforehand, especially if the weather is nice.

Gaetano’s Market & Deli is Astoria's first Italian-style deli and remains the only one on the North Coast. You'll find it on Commercial Street in the city's thriving downtown district.

Before you become overwhelmed with the array of meats, cheeses, sweets, and shelves stacked with imported gourmet goods, just think "picnic" for this visit. You can choose a made-to-order sandwich on fresh-baked ciabatta or from several prepared foods that are also good on-the-go.

While you may want to eat your food on the spot, save it for McClure Park, which is only a two-minute drive southwest of the market. While there's not much to it, this particular view of the Columbia River is tough to beat.

While you'll have to bring your own friend to serenade you, the spot has everything else one might want for an afternoon of al fresco dining.

Besides beautiful views, a simple swing set, and small ball field, the park added an especially adventurous element in 2018. After several years of planning and fundraising, a group of residents known as Friends of McClure Park spearheaded efforts to install a 45-foot fun slide into the hillside.

People of all ages can ride the slide at their own risk. It's said to be a bit harder on the hips the older one gets.

For those who'd rather spread out a blanket and simply relax, McClure Park also is the site of movie nights presented by the city's parks and recreation department each summer.

And of course, if you're in Astoria, we understand it's full of activities that aren't quite so under the radar. We wouldn't expect you to stay put in this one spot! A great way to continue your adventure is to stroll the Astoria Riverwalk.
