Short But Sweet: How to Spend Only a Few Hours in Morristown, New Jersey

Morristown, New Jersey, is a mid-sized town that packs a punch. Located in Morris County, it offers a walkable downtown, lush green spaces, and ties to Revolutionary War history. You’ll also find no shortage of restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and boutique stores—enough to keep both visitors and locals coming back for more. Here's how to spend only a few hours in Morristown, New Jersey.

Start Your Visit at Morristown Green

When visiting Morristown, your first stop should be Morristown Green. This two-and-a-half-acre park is in the center of the downtown area, surrounded by historic buildings, boutiques, and cafés. 

Morristown Green has a unique and layered history. It previously served as a military base and military training ground during the Revolutionary War—hence the statue of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and the Marquis de Lafayette you’ll likely come across. Washington also held his headquarters at the adjacent Arnold’s Tavern in 1777. While the building no longer exists, there’s a sign to commemorate its former location.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Morristown Green housed the county’s first courthouse and jail. Public punishments, including executions, were held there in its earliest years.

Morristown Green has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the park, and they might also come across concerts, community events, holiday decorations, and more.

Explore Downtown Morristown 

Next, take a stroll down Morristown’s main dining and shopping streets that surround the Green. Whether you’re craving a cup of coffee, a cozy café lunch, or an upscale restaurant experience, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings. Here are some of my favorite places to eat:

• Stirling Tavern — A go-to favorite for creative pub food
• Lokl Cafe — A hip spot for coffee and baked goods

• Roots Steakhouse — A New York-style steakhouse with multiple locations 
• Millie’s Old World Meatballs & Pizza — Serving delicious meatballs, sandwiches, wood-fired pizza, and coal-fired pizza
• Central Taqueria  — Authentic tacos and Mexican cuisine 

In the mood for shopping? Morristown also has plenty of local and boutique stores. I always visit Just Jersey for locally made gifts, trinkets, and home decor with a New Jersey theme. Another favorite is 23 South, a boutique shop for gifts and accessories. Before leaving Morristown, pick up some gourmet chocolates at Enjou Chocolat. 

Visit Ford Mansion and Morristown National Historical Park

Eating and shopping downtown will likely take up a good chunk of time. If you’re still looking for something to do, consider visiting the Ford Mansion. This Georgian-style home was built in the early 1770s, and it served as George Washington’s military headquarters during the harsh winter of 1779–1780.

Today, National Park Service rangers offer guided tours of the preserved house, which is authentically furnished to give visitors a glimpse of life during the Revolutionary War. You’ll learn a bit of history, and you’ll also gain access to Washington's Headquarters Museum, which features exhibits and artifacts from the time period. Plan to spend about one hour at these sites.

Morristown has plenty of options for things to do. If you’re looking for alternative picks, consider these ideas:

• Historic Speedwell — Visitors can explore mid-19th-century buildings and exhibits, including the site of the first public demonstration of the telegraph 
• Jockey Hollow — A historic site that served as the encampment of the Continental Army from December 1779 to June 1780; it’s part of the Morristown National Historical Park
• The Frelinghuysen Arboretum — A serene 127-acre arboretum located in Morristown
