Discover This Underrated Nevada Town Full of Quirky Charm

One of the quirkiest towns in Nevada is filled with unique attractions and small-town charm. A hidden gem worth exploring.

Home to the "World’s Tallest Ice Cream Stand," Coffin it Up, aka Coffinwood, a strange coffin-themed roadside attraction, and the host of the Inaugural Pahrump Alien Conference, Pahrump, Nevada, is no ordinary town. With its wonderfully weird personality, you would think this quirky town in Nevada is a major hub for tourists seeking something different. Surprisingly, the desert destination, located an hour west of the Vegas Strip, is more like an afterthought for people visiting the area. Little do they know, there are all kinds of whimsy, kitschy, and downright fun attractions waiting to be discovered here.

Where Is Pahrump and Why Is It So Unique

With a name like Pahrump, this unusual town in Nevada had no choice but to stand out. If you’re wondering where the name originated, you’re not alone. "Pah-Rimpi" came from the Southern Paiute language, meaning "water rock" due to the springs that flow underneath the desert floor. Sandwiched between Las Vegas and Death Valley National Park, it’s easy to see why it’s skipped in favor of the neon lights on the Strip and the vast desert terrain of one of the largest national parks in the United States. Those willing to detour off SR-60 will find the kind of place that die-hard roadtrippers dream of.

Not only does the town have a bunch of quirky attractions, but its Western theme is also a reason to stop in. You can find visitors snapping pics of the themed storefronts to add to their social media feed. Since it’s not too far from Area 51, of course, Pahrump is also connected to aliens and UFO sightings. As mentioned before, it hosts a yearly UFO conference, and it was once the broadcasting base of UFO radio host Art Bell (if you know, you know).

What I find interesting is that the town was dubbed as a popular retirement destination and the worst place to live in Nevada. So, which one is it, Pahrump? Moreover, the town remained fairly undeveloped and rural until about the 1960s when more modern conveniences were installed. Even today, with paved roads, strip malls, and modern amenities, there are only three stoplights in the entire community. Obviously, the whopping 40,000+ people living in this unincorporated town in Nevada know how special it is. And you should plan a trip to see it for yourself.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

alt

Most towns that fly under the radar will typically have a few hundred residents, not Pahrump. It’s more like a small city that’s holding on to its small-town Americana roots, and we’re not mad at it. The best part? The town unapologetically embraces its eccentricity.

Start your day by visiting the Pahrump Valley Museum. Aside from learning about the history of the town, you’ll appreciate the western-themed facade here. Expect to see old mining artifacts, vintage farming equipment, military uniforms, and exhibits about the historic trade route, Old Spanish Trail, and the nearby atomic testing site. That’s a lot to pack into such a small museum, but for a free roadside attraction, it’s worth the stop.

Another quirky spot is Coffin it Up, where you can take the two-hour tour through the studio to coffin-shaped oddities, hearses, a pet cemetery, and even a Church of the Coffin. This roadside attraction in Nevada is for those who enjoy a bit of dark humor in the desert. If this is not your thing, stop by the Death Valley Marketplace for something more wholesome. Not only can you get unique handmade items, gifts, treats, and more, but you can also pet and feed donkeys and horses here. This is one of those unexpected places where you can easily spend an hour or two just enjoying the vibe.

Why It’s Still Flying Under the Radar

After driving outside of the city limits with the flashing neon lights in your rearview mirror, Pahrump doesn’t quite have that Vegas flair. Naturally, it’s hard to compete with that. Sure, it’s a stopping point before you get to famous Death Valley, but most people find themselves just driving right by without taking the time to get to know the town. Some locals know it as a slow-paced hotspot for retirees, but outside of the quirky side of things, there are several main attractions worth seeing, too, including the "longest road course racetrack in the country."

Should you visit Pahrump? Absolutely! In between the main attractions and strip malls, you’ll discover weird and strange oddities that you can only see in Nevada. But more than that, the town is constantly growing, and who knows how long these quirky spots will be around. As a bonus, you can also see the rarest fish in the entire world at Devil’s Hole inside the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, just outside of Pahrump. If you ask me, these are more than enough reasons to visit this unusual town in Nevada.
