Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge, is a lovely place to live or visit. This city of around 219,000 residents is known for its rich history, interesting attractions, great restaurants, unique culture, and friendly folks. There's plenty to do in Baton Rouge, of course, but if you are in Baton Rouge and feel like taking a quick road trip to experience more of Louisiana and beyond, there are lots of other excellent and worthwhile destinations nearby, too.

Read on to check out our suggestions for memorable day trips departing from Baton Rouge. If you get up early enough, you'll have plenty of time to reach and explore any of the following destinations and make it back to Baton Rouge in time for dinner. Have a great adventure!

1. New Orleans, Louisiana

As everyone likely knows, the most popular place to visit in Louisiana is, without a doubt, New Orleans. NOLA is known throughout the world for its unique beauty, culture, and history, and there's something for every traveler within the city limits. It's only a little over an hour from Baton Rouge, and that makes it a perfect day trip destination from the state capital at any time of the year.

Whether you choose to spend your day in NOLA exploring the French Quarter and all it has to offer, visiting beautiful Audubon Park, strolling through the Garden District, learning about music, history, or culture in New Orleans' incredible museums, or riding around town on one of the city's famous streetcars, you're sure to be pleased with your time in the Crescent City. There's no place else in the world like New Orleans, and it's the perfect place to go for an unforgettable day trip. This is my personal favorite place to visit on this list, but if you feel like you've already done New Orleans to death, read on for more ideas.

2. Lafayette, Louisiana

Lafayette, Louisiana, is about an hour west of Baton Rouge. If New Orleans feels a little too busy and overwhelming for you, but you want to explore another great Louisiana city, then you're sure to love Lafayette. Not only is Lafayette known to some as "The Happiest City in America," but it's also known for the fact that it truly embraces and celebrates Cajun and Creole culture.

While in town, you might visit Acadian Village, a living history museum showcasing how Louisianans lived in the 1800s. There's also the Lafayette Science Museum, which is full of interactive exhibits that the whole family will enjoy. If you time your visit right, you might also be able to enjoy one of the city's incredible festivals, like Mardi Gras or the Festival International de Louisiana, which celebrates the region's diversity through music, dance, and food. There are lots of great things to do in Lafayette, and you'll love exploring this underrated southern city alone, with friends, or with family.

3. River Road Plantations, Louisiana

If you're interested in historic homes, plantations, and antebellum history in the United States, then you'll love visiting the River Road Plantations in Louisiana along the Mississippi River. Along this route, you'll find over a dozen restored and preserved plantation homes and properties that you can tour to help you learn about this interesting time in our nation's history. You won't have time to visit them all during a simple day trip, but choose two or three of them and make some time to engage in informative tours about their design, purpose, management, and restoration, and to learn about the people who once lived and worked in them, including slaves.

4. Gulfport & Biloxi, Mississippi

People who love beaches might consider heading east to Mississippi to explore and enjoy the beach towns of Biloxi and Gulfport. Both of these coastal cities are a little over two hours from Baton Rouge, so you'll have plenty of time to relax, shop, swim, and sunbathe before heading back to Louisiana for the evening. Visit a casino, take a boat tour, or do some fishing while you're in town—you'll love the laid-back, almost tropical atmosphere in both of these destinations.

5. Vicksburg, Mississippi

History buffs might enjoy a trip north to Vicksburg, Mississippi, to explore Vicksburg National Military Park. This national park site preserves the site of the Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, which was fought from March 29 to July 4, 1863. Visitors can sign up for a ranger-led tour of the site or explore it on their own; signage and audio tours make the latter quite easy.

If you have interest and time, you can also visit the Old Depot Museum, the Old Courthouse Museum, the historic Balfour House, or the Beidenharn Coca-Cola Museum. Vicksburg is about three hours from Baton Rouge, but you'll have plenty of time to learn about this important Civil War battle and the town that surrounds it before you have to head back to Louisiana's capital city for the night.

No matter which of the above day trips from Baton Rouge you choose to undertake, you're sure to have a good time! Each of these trips will be memorable and educational, and they'll all be adventures you'll never forget. Have a great road trip, and when you return from exploration, Baton Rouge will be waiting for you. Safe travels!
