Almost Nobody Knows That Parts of the Iconic Movie ‘My Cousin Vinny’ Were Filmed in This Tiny Georgia Town

There have been many movies filmed in Georgia. One of the best is My Cousin Vinny, primarily made in the little city of Monticello.

Peach State cinephiles are well aware that there have been plenty of television shows and movies filmed in Georgia. Some of our small towns have been featured in Hallmark Christmas movies, and you even can take tours of Atlanta and Senoia to see spots from the hit AMC zombie show The Walking Dead.

Tens of thousands of people visit Savannah each year, hoping to see the scenery shown off in films like Forrest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. There is one film that was made in Georgia, though, that doesn't get quite the hype it deserves: the 1992 comedy My Cousin Vinny.

Where was 'My Cousin Vinny' filmed?

Where was My Cousin Vinny filmed? Nearly all of My Cousin Vinny was filmed in the state of Georgia, with the little Jasper County community of Monticello providing the bulk of the scenery. Though it was made over 30 years ago, you can still see many of the locations from the film in Monticello today.

The movie was a hit when it was released, earning more than $64 million on an $11 million budget, but it doesn't come up in film discussions as much today as it once did... outside of Monticello, Georgia, anyway. The movie is a hilarious comedy, and I think it's definitely worth a watch if you've never seen it before. The film stars Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, pictured above with the Academy Award she won for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. (Gene Hackman is standing next to her with his own trophy for his work in the 1992 film Unforgiven.)

'My Cousin Vinny' Filming Locations in Monticello

Though it was filmed here in Georgia, the film's action takes place in small-town Alabama. One of the My Cousin Vinny filming locations in Monticello is The Sac-O-Suds.

Editor's note: Sadly, Sac-O-Suds is now closed.

The film portrays two New York college students (played by Ralph Macchio and Mitchell Whitfield) who are traveling through the state. The two stop at a Sac-O-Suds convenience store for snacks, but after they leave, the store clerk is killed in a robbery. The pair of out-of-towners is eventually accused of committing the crime, arrested, and brought to the sheriff's office.

Unable to afford a local lawyer, they hire Vinny Gambini, a Brooklyn, New York, lawyer who is the cousin of Ralph Macchio's character. He has only recently passed the bar exam, and much of the film's humor comes from his brash antics.

'My Cousin Vinny' Exterior Shots: Jasper County Courthouse

All of the exterior courthouse scenes in the movie were filmed outside of the Jasper County Courthouse in Monticello. Most of the interior courtroom shots were filmed on a set built in a warehouse.

The scenes in which Vinny and his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito (played by Tomei), are driving around town were mostly filmed in Monticello. Next time you're in this charming little city, keep your eyes peeled and see how many locations you can spot from the movie!
