Draper Wildlife Management Area is somewhat of a hidden gem. I know, I know, that word gets thrown around a lot lately. But truly, this sunflower field remains a detour that not many take, and for the life of me, I cannot understand why, especially not after seeing what this area offers in terms of natural beauty.

Draper Wildlife Management Area in York County, South Carolina, should absolutely be on your road trip radar. Each summer, this peaceful patch of countryside explodes into color as acres of sunflowers bloom in full golden glory. It’s one of those hidden gems that surprises you with just how simple and beautiful it is—and it’s totally free to visit.

Located just over an hour southwest of Charlotte and about 45 minutes from Rock Hill, Draper WMA is managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and typically used for hunting, wildlife observation, and conservation. But come mid to late summer (usually July), it transforms into one of the most photogenic fields in the state.

The sunflower fields are planted intentionally by SCDNR to support local wildlife, especially doves and pollinators, but they’ve also become a low-key local tradition. Visitors show up early to walk the mowed trails, admire the sea of yellow, and snap photos among the towering stalks. The best time to catch them in full bloom is a small window—roughly the first two to three weeks of July—so it’s worth checking online or calling ahead for updates before you go.

Despite its growing popularity, the vibe here stays relaxed. There are no ticket booths, no gift shops, and no crowds of tourists. You’ll find gravel parking, plenty of space to spread out, and often just the quiet buzz of bees and the occasional songbird. Bring water, sunscreen, and maybe a picnic if you want to linger.
