When you think of crystal blue water, Oklahoma may not be the first place that comes to mind. But Spring Creek in northeastern Oklahoma is a hidden gem that boasts pristine creek water and defies all expectations of a swimming hole in the Sooner State. Despite the prevalence of red dirt in the state, Spring Creek's water stands out as it is not tinged with the earth's hue.

This sapphire-colored creek is one of Oklahoma's best-kept secrets, inviting visitors to take a dip and experience its unique beauty. Ready to experience it for yourself? Here's everything to know about this hidden swimming spot in Oklahoma, and how to plan the perfect day trip there.

What Makes the Water at Spring Creek So Blue

Spring Creek starts in the town of Kansas, Oklahoma, and meanders 34 miles through Delaware, Cherokee, and Mayes Counties before emptying into Fort Gibson Lake. It's one of the most immaculate and large Ozark streams that still exists in the state today.

This natural, spring-fed creek has water temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees and is known for its diverse fish and cool, refreshing water. The conservation efforts to keep the spring clean, as well as the cool temperatures, keep it clear blue. It's quite an anomaly for the state, as most other creeks tend to get murky from the reddish dirt found almost everywhere.

Ultimately, Spring Creek is the perfect spot for taking a dip to cool off on a hot summer day, and for enjoying outdoor water sports like kayaking, tubing, and fishing.

Things to Do at Spring Creek

There are so many things to do at this gorgeous swimming hole. One of our favorite ways to enjoy the creek is by camping out at Smokey Valley Campground, located just outside Locust Drive. This campground is one of the few places that allow public access to Spring Creek. All-day passes or overnight camping are available for a fee, and you can bring your trailer or camp out in tents.

Pitch a tent and stay overnight, fully immersing yourself in the beauty of Spring Creek. The kids will also love the outdoor adventure. As the sun sets, enjoy the sounds of nature as you drift off to sleep. Wake up to the sounds of birds chirping and the gentle trickle of the creek as you begin your day.

Spend your days swimming, kayaking, or just lounging by the water. With its cool, clear water, Spring Creek is the perfect place to beat the heat and relax. I don't know about you, but I could spend all day soaking in water that looked this good. It's so calm, too.

Best Time to Visit Spring Creek in Oklahoma

The best time to visit Spring Creek is definitely in the summer. This is when the creek water is at its peak with its blue hues, and when it's most refreshing. Camping near the creek is one of the best Oklahoma summer getaways, even if just for a day. While there might be larger crowds during this time, it's worth the trip.

You can go in the Spring or fall to go fishing, but if you're hoping for crystal blue waters, summer is prime time. You can also visit Fort Gibson Lake—a pristine Oklahoma lake that Spring Creek feeds into.

What to Know Before Visiting Spring Creek

Before planning your trip to Spring Creek, there are a few things to keep in mind before visiting. Many parts of Spring Creek are located on private property—Smokey Valley Campground is one of the few public access points to the Creek. Keep this in mind as you're looking for a spot to park and enjoy the creek.

Dogs are also allowed at Spring Creek, as long as they are well-behaved and can remain on a leash. Also, plan to bring plenty of floating devices to enjoy the creek, as well as towels, beach chairs, and other essentials.

Lastly, note the other fun things to do in northeastern Oklahoma while taking the drive. While in town, we recommend visiting Har-Ber Village near Grand Lake. This village will take you back in time over a hundred years to when life on the Oklahoma plains was much slower, simpler, and more family-focused.

If you can't make it to northeastern Oklahoma and you live in the northwestern portion of the state, another great swimming hole that has beautiful water is Gage Artesian Beach, Oklahoma's largest outdoor swimming pool, or other hidden Oklahoma rivers.
