Swim at This Iconic Blue Swimming Hole in Florida for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

An easy forested trail leads to one of the most stunning natural springs in Florida.

Swimming and Florida go hand-in-hand. The Sunshine State is world-famous for its beaches, beckoning swimmers from near and far to enjoy crystal-clear water and sugary-white stretches of sand. But swimming destinations aren't limited to the coast; Florida boasts beautiful swimming holes and springs just waiting to be explored. One of our favorites is the Madison Blue Spring swimming hole in the namesake state park.

Madison Blue Spring is a stunning natural wonder located along the west bank of the Withlacoochee River in Madison Blue Spring State Park. For centuries, it was used as an invaluable source of fresh water. Today, the spring continues to draw tourists, naturalists, and swimming enthusiasts eager to experience its water. The water flows from a large underground cavern, which is located about 25 feet below the surface.

The crystal-clear spring is approximately 82 feet wide and bubbles from below ground into a limestone basin, giving the appearance of blue-green water. You can access the swimming hole via the 0.9-mile out-and-back Madison Blue Spring Nature Trail. The trail itself is pretty straightforward; a sandy path winds through the lush forest.

Arriving at the spring, you'll notice its brilliant color. On a humid summer day, there's hardly a more refreshing place to take a dip. Madison Blue Spring is a first-magnitude spring, a categorization given to springs that produce at least 2,800 liters of water per second. The water is about 72 degrees F year-round, which can feel brisk but is refreshing on a hot day. The spring is also popular among certified cave divers; approximately 30 feet below the surface, an aquatic cave leads to an extensive underwater cave system.

In addition to being a beloved swimming hole, the spring is also home to wildlife. If you visit during a quiet moment, keep your eyes peeled for turtles, sunfish, and catfish. Madison Blue Spring State Park is a beautiful place to experience the unique Florida aquifer. As you explore the area, you'll notice lots of sinkholes. Some of the limestone outcroppings are home to ancient marine organisms.

Something important to note: Madison Blue Spring is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, so if you are planning to visit, it's wise to go during a weekday or even off-season if possible. This is your best bet for finding a parking space in the limited lot. There's a minimal entrance fee per vehicle.
