Forget Fast Food, Because the Smashburger at Smash’d Burger Bar Is King

Craving a truly amazing smashburger? Head to Historic Irvington in Indianapolis for a burger experience that's changing the game.

Indiana doesn’t always get the national credit it deserves for its food scene, but let me tell you - it’s solid. We’re talking about a state famous for the Hoosier pork tenderloin sandwich, a masterpiece of a meal that’s about three times the size of the bun it’s served on. Head to Gnaw Bone Food Mart near Nashville, Indiana, and you’ll see what I mean. But let’s be honest, food doesn’t have to be fancy to be absolutely amazing. Sometimes, you just want a burger. And when I want a burger, I want a smashburger.

So, what’s a smashburger? If you’ve never had the pleasure of eating a smashburger, let me change your life real quick. It starts as a ball of high-quality ground beef, and then - wait for it - it’s smashed flat onto a hot griddle. This isn’t just for show; smashing the burger maximizes the crispy, caramelized edges while keeping the inside ridiculously juicy. To me, this makes smashburgers vastly superior to their thicker, fatter counterparts.

Now that we’ve established that smashburgers are the best burgers, let me introduce you to Smash’d Burger Bar, the Indianapolis smashburger spot that’s home to the smashburgers of my dreams. Located in Historic Irvington, a neighborhood known for its gorgeous tree-lined streets, cool vintage shops, and legendary Halloween Festival, Smash’d fits right in. This Indianapolis restaurant is casual but polished, with industrial lighting, exposed brick, and an open kitchen that lets you watch the magic happen. The staff? Friendly, fast, and ready to dish out expert burger recommendations like seasoned pros.

And there are lots of burgers to recommend!

The Original Smash’d keeps things simple but satisfying, with Smash’d Sauce, lettuce, pickles, onions, and American cheese. For something a little extra, the Sleepy Hollow adds a gourmet twist with roasted garlic aioli, bacon, crispy onions, lettuce, tomato, and Swiss cheese.

If you’re the type who likes to customize, Smash’d offers a build-your-own option, letting you stack your dream burger with whatever toppings you crave. And if you love surprises, the Burger of the Month always keeps things exciting: Past favorites have included creations like the Angry Bird, a turkey burger with Swiss cheese, chipotle aioli, lettuce, onion, and tomato.

But if you’re feeling especially bold, the Triple Double dares you to take on six full burger patties, six whole slices of cheese, and all the fixings. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it is for the very, very hungry.

This Indiana burger joint isn’t playing around when it comes to quality. Every burger is made with a fresh (never frozen!), quarter-pound patty made from Braveheart’s Midwest Black Angus Beef, smashed, and seared to crispy-edged perfection.

Not in a burger mood? First of all, who are you? But secondly, you’re still in luck.

Smash’d Burger Bar in Indianapolis has plenty of other tasty options, from the Bacon Me Crazy - a classic BLT leveled up with bacon and Texas toast - to the Ultimate Grilled Chz, a melty masterpiece with bacon, American and Swiss cheese, tomato, and Frisco sauce. Even salad lovers get their due with the Cluckin’ Chicken Salad, loaded with grilled chicken, cheddar jack, hard-boiled egg, and fresh veggies.

No great burger experience is complete without top-tier sides, and Smash’d delivers. Choose from waffle fries, loaded fries, sweet potato waffle fries, side salads, or even applesauce if you’re feeling extra wholesome. If you stop by during the weekday lunch hours, you can snag a combo deal: $11 for a Classic Cheeseburger, $12 for a specialty burger, or $13 for a Salmon or Beyond Burger, all with waffle fries and a soda.

And for dessert? One word: Dole Whip. Yes, the pineapple soft serve of Disney fame is here in Indiana, and yes, you need it.

Indianapolis has a lot to offer beyond just fantastic food. While you’re here, check out the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indy 500 and a must-visit for racing fans. Then, after working up an appetite exploring the city, head to Smash’d Burger Bar for the best smashburger experience in Indiana.
