Perched Above Lake Jocassee, This Overlook Is One Of The Best Views in All Of South Carolina

The Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area was named by National Geographic as one of the World's Last Great Places and Lake Jocassee one of the most beautiful lakes in America by Places to Travel. Oscar Wigington, for whom the overlook is named, was a tree farmer and former Mayor of the little town of Salem.

The road you travel to get to the overlook was also named for him, the Oscar Wigington Memorial Scenic Byway. It's a gorgeous drive, winding through the hardwood of Sumter National Forest along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It starts around Oconee State Park and ends just across the North Carolina border, an almost 15-mile drive.

The overlook is located not far from the border, where you can pull off the road into the parking area and get out of the car for this breathtaking South Carolina view.
