Perched Above Lake Jocassee, This Overlook Is One Of The Best Views in All Of South Carolina
The Jocassee Gorges Wilderness Area was named by National Geographic as one of the World's Last Great Places and Lake Jocassee one of the most beautiful lakes in America by Places to Travel. This area is unquestionably one of the most scenic in the state. One of the best ways to experience its beauty is at the Oscar Wigington Overlook, where you'll find one of the most scenic views in South Carolina.
Oscar Wigington, for whom the overlook is named, was a tree farmer and former Mayor of the little town of Salem.
The road you travel to get to the overlook was also named for him, the Oscar Wigington Memorial Scenic Byway. It's a gorgeous drive, winding through the hardwood of Sumter National Forest along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It starts around Oconee State Park and ends just across the North Carolina border, an almost 15-mile drive.
The overlook is located not far from the border, where you can pull off the road into the parking area and get out of the car for this breathtaking South Carolina view.
It's a great spot to snap some photos, the perfect view of both the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lake Jocassee all in one.
If you want to see it with the bold fall foliage colors, you'll need to plan your visit for some time likely in October and keep an eye on foliage peak predictions as that season nears.
No matter the conditions or time of day, the view at the Oscar Wigington Overlook is simply a magical sight.
For one of the most scenic views in South Carolina, make plans to visit this overlook if you've never been. And if you love waterfalls, there are over 150 waterfalls in Oconee County to explore while you're in this area:
