Welcome to Small Business Spotlight, our celebration of the ingenuity and innovation of small business owners across the country. From well-established restaurants to brand-new specialty stores and everything in between, these businesses—and the hardworking proprietors at their helm—are truly an inspiration.

Keen readers looking to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of mystery and thriller literature should look no further than New York City’s Tribeca neighborhood, home of The Mysterious Bookshop.

The store, which opened in 1979 and was recently selected as the Best Independent Bookstore of 2025 by USA Today, is a haven for those with a penchant for mystery novels and who love the thrill of a "whodunnit" book. It’s the world’s oldest specialty bookstore and a dream come true for founder, publisher Otto Penzler.

“Otto has dedicated the majority of his life and career to the world of mystery books, through collecting, editing, anthologizing, selling, and publishing them,” explained The Mysterious Bookshop's manager, Ryan Lee Gilbert. "Opening an all-mystery bookshop was a natural progression of this passion, and it has been a tremendous success, establishing us as the oldest and largest mystery-only bookshop in the world."

Throughout the compact yet bountiful store, bibliophiles will find everything from classic murder mystery novels to the latest and greatest thriller fiction from social media-trending authors. The store also specializes in rare books, signed books, and first editions, which make great collector's items.

According to Gilbert, the bookstore’s most popular authors tend to be those who consistently release new books, typically on an annual or biennial basis. This includes authors such as Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Louise Penny, Donna Leon, James Lee Burke, Stephen Hunter, Joyce Carol Oates, and Daniel Silva.

The Bibliomystery series was initially conceived by Penzler as a way to generate funds for the NYC bookshop. A bibliomystery is a genre where a book or manuscript is central to the plot of the novel, and Gilbert explained that Penzler personally reaches out to each author, inviting them to participate, resulting in an exclusive limited-edition story written specifically for the store. With one new release every year, presented as a stunning hardback dressed in an illustrated dust jacket, each story is a labor of love.

“A significant mission of our shop is to help people build their at-home libraries with valuable collector's items, and the Bibliomystery series serves this purpose exceptionally well,” Gilbert said.

Social media trends, such as BookTok, have also influenced sales as readers flock to the store to browse the books that have been taking over “For You” pages.

“The rise of social media platforms like BookTok has certainly been beneficial; it has helped both us and fans of the genre discover a wide array of new authors and books,” said Gilbert. “Ultimately, any initiative that celebrates books is good for business,”

Community is at the heart of the store, with frequent events celebrating new releases and the opportunity to have novels signed by the author and gain insights beyond the pages. The popular Crime Club is the store’s unique take on a monthly subscription, where members will receive a signed hardcover first edition title, categorized by sub-genres like Hardboiled & Noir, Thriller & Espionage, and Psychological Suspense. “Our clubs are incredibly popular and offer a fantastic way for individuals to build their own mystery book collection, mirroring how Otto began his own collection all those years ago,” noted Gilbert.
