Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. The Taos Museum at Fechin House in New Mexico is a historical and architectural masterpiece, not only in its design but also in its legacy as a centerpiece for art and culture in Taos. Originally the home of Russian-American artist Nicolai Fechin and his family in the mid-1900s, Fechin House is now listed on both the National Registry of Historic American Homes and the State of NM Registered Cultural Properties.
Now an art museum, this museum in Taos has many of its internal design elements carved and molded by Fechin himself; additionally, he created many of the lighting elements and widened the windows to allow for a better view of the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Various elements of Nicolai Fechin’s influences are noted throughout the interior, including those of his Russian heritage and the Taos area's Native American and Hispanic cultures. The gentle architectural lines, warm tones, and soft lighting create a lovely and inviting atmosphere.
As you move upstairs, you will find yourself bathed in ample, bright natural light in the studio and piano room. Many art exhibitions have been and continue to be held in this area, making use of natural light to create a museum-quality art space.
So many elements of this house’s beautiful design incorporate natural light, giving an airy feeling to every room you walk into. This brightly-lit bedroom is no exception.
On the museum’s walls, you will also find permanent exhibition pieces from Nicolai Fechin’s vast portfolio of his portrait and landscape charcoals and paintings. He continued perfecting the art techniques he had learned at the Imperial Academy of Arts throughout his time living in Taos. His legacy is preserved on these walls.
Additional pieces of Taos Art Museum’s permanent collection include many pieces created by members of the Taos Society of Artists. These pieces, and the rustic furniture surrounding them, will draw you into the true heart of the Southwest and the flourishing artist community in Taos.
