The Most Iconic View in Maine Is Also a Stunning Slice of History
Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.
I'm always mesmerized by the sight of a lighthouse. These structures are so simplistic, yet absolutely majestic. The history of New England lighthouses makes them equally as magical. These seaside beacons have long served as reliable protectors and they have been witness to shipwrecks, rescues, and numerous horrific storms. While stunning lighthouses dot the shores of our region, none is as iconic as the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
If the Portland Head Light looks familiar, it is probably because you have seen photos of it at one point or another. It is considered the most photographed lighthouse in the country and possibly the world.
The stunning Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The structure was completed in 1791. It was originally lit with whale oil lamps but is now automated. Throughout the years, the lighthouse has seen several updates and restorations. The fog signal and light are currently maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Town of Cape Elizabeth manages the rest of the property.
If you want to enter the lighthouse, you will have to plan your visit in advance. It is open to the public one day a year during Maine Open Lighthouse Day, which takes place in September.
Even if you don’t have the opportunity to climb the stairs of the Portland Head Light, a visit to see the light is well worth the trip. You can still take in incredible views of the historic structure from adjacent Fort Williams Park. The park is a beautiful place to walk, picnic, or just gaze out at the ocean. There is also a pretty children's garden to explore. I recommend visiting the old innkeeper’s home which serves as a museum of exhibits on the history of Portland Head Light. The shop doubles as a gift shop. Also, be sure to stop for an ice cream or lobster roll at one of the park's on-site kiosks.
Have you made a trip to view the Portland Head Light? How does it compare to other lighthouses you have visited? More information about this beautiful structure can be found on the Portland Head Light/Fort Williams Park website. While you are in the Cape Elizabeth area, be sure to drive by the haunted Beckett's Castle, and grab lunch at The Lobster Shack at Two Lights.
