When it comes to haunted places, you might think about creepy old haunted hotels, lighthouses, or dilapidated mansions built in the 1800s with creaky doors and shutters that bang in the wind. But libraries?
The Sweetwater Library in Green River, Wyoming is anything but sweet. You see, this haunted library in Wyoming has a rather sordid history that has come back to haunt it to this day. Pull up a log by the campfire and listen closely, because this tale might end with a surprising finale.
It all began in 1892 at the Green River, Wyoming city cemetery. A few short years later, the cemetery was bursting with inhabitants, so they had to move it to a new location.
All the tombstones and bodies were relocated. So they thought. As the years passed, the abandoned cemetery went through several transformations.
In 1944, temporary housing was built there for World War II veterans. It lasted until 1956. During construction, more bodies were found… and moved.
The lot sat abandoned for many years after that, other than a lone swing set children would swing on with fall leaves twisting in the wind.
In 1979, construction began for the Sweetwater County Library which was relocating to this abandoned plot of land. During excavation, more bones were found, including an ancient skull with wisps of red hair.
They are still finding more remains during construction projects on the site. Fear that some of the bones could be infected with smallpox troubled local inhabitants of Green River. To this day, it is believed there are still buried remains below the back corner of the library.
The library is well-known for its paranormal activity. One unnerving experience was told by a librarian in the late 1980s.
She turned away from her computer briefly. When she turned back, the screen was black except for one thing. Her name was blinking on the screen in front of her. The computer did not have word processing capabilities, and they did not have email.
Other strange occurrences happen regularly. Flickering lights, figures walking past that can’t be found, and books that are discovered on the floor open to mysterious passages like someone from the grave is sending a message.
Various ghost hunter groups and paranormal enthusiasts visit the library each year and take photos. They claim to see ghostly images, faces, and artifacts that weren’t there in person.
Are there really ghosts from the past, or unsettled souls roaming the aisles at night searching for a door to the other side?
We can tell things are getting a little creepy in here. Perhaps it’s time to lighten the mood.
