There is no shortage of celebrations that reference the German heritage of Wisconsin, but the winter Christmas Market at the Osthoff might just be my favorite.
Up in Elkhart Lake, near Sheboygan, this area is known for it's road race and time relaxing in the summer at this beautiful resort, but for 10 days every winter, the Osthoff puts up a giant heated tent and treats Wisconsinites to one of the best Christmas markets outside of Germany.
The Osthoff is a giant, sprawling resort reminiscent of the ones you'd have found on the east coast in the 1950's. In the summer there's no limit to the activities you can partake in, but they also do a great job at making it a year-round destination. The resort is especially gorgeous dressed up for winter and in early December you'll find the Christmas Market.
The market is open from December 1 - December 10 this year. The tent opens every day at 10 am and admission is $6.
The Market has been running for 20 years at the Osthoff meaning they've got this thing down. The tent feels like it goes on forever and the stalls sell artisan crafts from all around the midwest with a focus on Wisconsin producers.
From gluhwein and Nuremburg bratwurst to nutcrackers and Weihnachtspyramide (candle spinners) and everything in between, you'll find yourself wanting to spend hours looking at all the intricate things for sale.
There's a big food court area in the middle where you can indulge in potato pancakes, bratwurst and more.
Or just grab a beer or wine or coffee and rest your feet for a few minutes while you people watch.
You'll find tons of imported surprises here to trim your house and your tree.
The delicate blown glass ornaments are always popular ...
... as are the beautiful wooden nutcrackers and carvings.
Make a list of everyone you need to shop for a be prepared to want to fill your own stocking with all the beautiful goodies available here.
This market feels so authentic, with lilting music floating overhead, goods from all around the world, gluhwein and sausages and all the other little things that make a German Christmas Market such a cool and unique experience.
If you haven't already, make plans for a little day trip to this area for some totally authentic, completely unique Christmas cheer.

While you're in the area, plan to head to Plymouth, the Cheese Capital of the World.
