It'll take you a bit of traveling to find this lavender farm way up at the edge of Door County, but it's absolutely worth it. What started as a retirement hobby has grown into the largest lavender farm in Wisconsin and the entire Midwest. In late July they often host a lavender festival that draws thousands of people, but any time is a good time to take in the lush, gorgeous fields at Fragrant Isle. Let's check it out.
When the owners of Fragrant Isle wanted to retire, they chose Door County.
One of them had grown up in France and a small idea about growing lavender turned into planting more than 16,000 plants - with plans for more.
The farm has nearly 50 different varieties of lavender, including pink and white varieties.
They own other fields, but the 21 acre location on Airport Rd is their main site and makes them the largest single-site lavender grower in the Midwest.
The beautiful farms is fragrant and peaceful and invites you to sit and enjoy the relaxing setting.
The farm includes a demonstration garden, a small cafe and a shop with all their lavender products.
Lavender is most well-known for its essential oil that helps induce relaxation and sleep, soothe minor cuts, scratches and burns, and scent the skin with a light, flowery aroma. There are also culinary varieties of lavender used for all kinds of applications.
Washington Island is an ideal location for growing the plant as it's normally 10 degrees warmer or cooler than the mainland depending on the season. Lavender doesn't actually like "good" soil, so the unusual conditions help keep the plant happy.
The lavender is harvested in late summer. Some is done by machines, but much of it is done by hand.
The lavender is cut and gathered by hand.
Then hand tied into bouquets that will then be dried.
The plants dry for five to six weeks and then are distilled down for their potent, fragrant oils.
On site you'll find lavender lotions, soaps and more, but also lavender jams, chocolates, gelato and even dog biscuits.
Visiting Fragrant Isle requires a 25-minute ferry ride from the mainland, but it's so worth the trip to transport yourself to this magical, fragrant, beautiful farm.
Fragrant Isle is located at 1350 Airport Road, Washington Island, WI 54246. To learn more, visit their website here.
