La Crosse has been an important port along the Mississippi River for more than a century. Access to the Mighty Mississippi was important to our state's growth and for trade. You can experience life on the river as it may have been 100 years ago on the amazing La Crosse Queen paddleboat.
With a unique split-paddle design, the boat is only powered by its paddles, moving you up and down the river on a unique, relaxing tour of not only La Crosse, but the gorgeous surrounding area. It's a perfect way to spend a summer day with your family.
A trip up and down the Mississippi River on the La Crosse Queen is a delightful and unique way to see the area. Harken back 100 years or so to imagine what travel by river might have been like.
Though the boat is a replica of those that would have been on the Mighty Mississippi a century ago, it is an authentic replica. Her sternwheels are her only means of propulsion. According to their website, "The La Crosse Queen has a split sternwheel and each half is run by a twin diesel engine; these power hydraulic motors which turn the paddles. The split paddlewheel gives the Queen greater maneuverability and dependability. This is in contrast to most Mississippi River paddlewheelers in operation today that have a "free wheeling" paddlewheel at the stern of the boat for visual effect, but have traditional screw-type engines hidden for their real means of propulsion."
The daily 90 minute sightseeing cruise does not take reservations and goes out daily at 11 am and 1:30 pm until mid September when it only goes out at 1:30 pm. That cruise is just $15.50 for adults and $7.75 for kids ages 1-11.
In addition to the sightseeing cruises, La Crosse Queen offers a number of meal cruises, including a pizza cruise on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, a dinner cruise on Friday nights that includes live music, a longer Saturday night cruise, a Sunday brunch and a limited offer 3-hour cruise.
You'll get a unique view of the river valley and the city of La Crosse from the water. In the summer, you might see bald eagles or other animals. In the fall, the changing colors make for a truly beautiful trip.
The interior is climate-controlled while the top deck is covered by a canopy but provides open-air viewing of your surroundings.
You'll pass numerous bridges, some of which will have to move to let you through. Weather permitting, many of the trips also include lock-thrus, letting you see another unusual part of life on the river.
The boat is wheelchair accessible and is a perfect way for your whole family to get out on the river and experience life from a different time period. You'll never forget the views from the river.
The La Crosse Queen is located at 405 E Veterans Memorial Dr, La Crosse, WI 54601.
