Surf’s up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, a town that’s making a name for itself in Great Lakes surfing. Ideally located on Lake Michigan’s west shore, Sheboygan has gained a reputation as the Malibu of the Midwest. Ready to catch a wave? Here’s how you can experience some of the best freshwater surfing in America.
Sheboygan is located an easy drive from Milwaukee or Green Bay so you can time your trip for when the waves are best. The city has big beautiful beaches and long expanses of sand – it’s a pleasant place to relax lakeside, even if you don’t climb onto a board.
Sheboygan has the ideal location to catch big waves on the lake. The biggest swells form when strong winds blow in from the northeast or southwest.
The peak surf season in Sheboygan runs from August to April. Yep, when the water gets cold, the surf action heats up. This is a surf experience that is nothing like the beaches of Hawaii – surfers wear full wetsuits with hoods and take to the waves early in the morning. Sometimes surfers have to cross snow and ice to get into the water.
Surfers who endure these extreme conditions are rewarded with an experience like no other. If you’re new to surfing you might be better off learning in August or September.
