Just off the highway between Madison and Milwaukee, there’s a pleasant little lake town that feels a bit like paradise on a warm summer day. Lake Mills is a charming and historic community with a refreshing lake that’s beckoned generations of summer lovers. Its sand beach may be just what you need – go ahead and take the Lake Mills exit off of Interstate 94. Here’s why it’s a Wisconsin lake town you need to visit.
Lake Mills is a city in Jefferson County with a population of 6,200. It’s an old town, officially chartered in 1836 - years before Wisconsin was a state.
There’s plenty to do in this little town. It’s popular with antiquers and it has some great local restaurants that have a variety of tempting offerings.
But on warm days, the star attraction is the lake. Rock Lake played a big role in the early days of Lake Mills – in the 1800s there was a sawmill and grist mill that used the lake’s water for power.
Today the lake powers plenty of good times. Sandy Beach is a city-owned park that’s a popular summer destination. It covers over 27 acres.
Part of Sandy Beach is occupied by a seasonal mobile home park. But that’s just the start of what you’ll find here. There are two swimming beaches, a boat launch, and five sand volleyball courts.
The lake is a wonderful swimming beach, and the gentle sandy lakefront is appropriate for swimmers of all ages. But be warned: The secret is out. On warm summer days, you’ll want to arrive early to find the ideal location for your beach towel.
I’ve spent some time on this waterfront photographing the annual triathlon that’s held here – the lake is beautiful, and I couldn't resist wading in while i was there. Make plans to visit it yourself! Learn more about Sandy Beach on the City of Lake Mills website. Interested in more summer fun? Here are the state’s best attractions.
