There’s a special bed and breakfast in Wisconsin that will have you dreaming about the golden era of train travel. The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad operates a historic train line in the little Northwoods town of Trego. It offers a variety of railroad experiences, but the best allows guests to enjoy an overnight stay on the train. It’s a trip through time that you won’t forget.
The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad is located on 26 miles of track, between Spooner and Springbrook. It preserves, restores, and celebrates the train cars and locomotives that once ferried people all over Wisconsin and beyond.
New interstate highways, improved automobiles, and changed lifestyles spelled doom for widespread train travel, but the railroad is alive and well in this corner of the Northwoods.
The railroad offers a variety of scenic train rides, and there is something for everyone. Options include, a Wine & Cheese Train, a Family Pizza Train, a seasonal Santa Train, and a Dinner Train.
It’s hard to top the longest experience the Bed & Breakfast Train. This overnight experience starts at 5 p.m. When you check into your carefully restored stateroom, head to the lounge to kick off your night on the rails.
Enjoy a private dining experience that includes an appetizer plate, a cup of soup, and your choice of one of five different entrees. A ticket includes coffee, iced tea, and lemonade – a cash bar offers additional libations.
The train travels at a leisurely pace along the scenic Namekagon River, giving riders some beautiful sunset views. It returns to station for the night at about 8 p.m., giving riders plenty of time to enjoy a cocktail or two and pleasant conversation with fellow travelers. You’ll likely find that this almost-forgotten way of travel is pretty fantastic!
In the morning, grab a shower before enjoying a continental breakfast of coffee, juice, danish and donuts from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., a hot breakfast is served in the dining car.
