Normally, if a restaurant is deemed unforgettable, it’s because of the food. However, that’s not always the case. Take Chances, for example. A visit to the longstanding eatery is likely to be a memorable one - not because of the tasty fare, though. Instead, it’s the spirits that are sure to make an impression, and we’re not talking about adult beverages. Take a look:
Chances is located on Main Street in the small village of Rochester. Though the eatery didn’t open until the '80s, the building that houses it dates back to 1843.
Originally known as The Union House, the building was the first brick structure constructed in Rochester. But the building’s history doesn’t end there.
It has a long and storied past - part of which includes having been a stop on the Underground Railroad. According to many, the building is now haunted and has its past to thank for its phantom residents.
According to lore, seven ghosts live at Chances, including a Civil War soldier and runaway slave named Sadie.
The restaurant’s owners have commented on the paranormal activity and even mention it on the menu, reminding diners to look out for the “lady in the green ball gown waiting for her Civil War soldier to return.”
Don’t worry, though. The seven ghosts that live at Chances are said to be friendly. Rather than trying to scare employees and patrons, the ghosts at Chances are phantom pranksters, who prefer to play jokes, like turning on the radio or hiding items, only to return them later.
However, not all the stories associated with the eatery’s paranormal past are so lighthearted.
During construction in the 1970s, tunnels were discovered underneath the building, and according to reports, the tunnels had previously been sealed because, at night, screams and wails could be heard coming from them. Some even believed the tunnels led to straight to hell.
