If you're from Milwaukee, we're sure you've used this iconic building to decide what to wear tomorrow. From downtown business professionals to your average Joe, everyone knows about the Milwaukee Gas Light building. Here's why we think it's so unique!
The Milwaukee Gas Light Building, also known as the Wisconsin Gas Building, is a classic art-deco structure located in the heart of downtown.
This iconic building crowned in Cream City brick has been around since 1930.
Besides being a stunning piece of architecture, the Gas Light building has been used as a tool for all Milwaukeeans.
Atop the building is a weather beacon shaped as a gas flame to tell us about upcoming weather!
The light has been a consistent feature of our horizon for decades, with the exception of a short period between 1973 and 1985 when it remained unlit due to an energy crisis.
Milwaukeeans have even made up a rhyme to remember what the colors mean...
When the flame is red, it's warm weather ahead!
When the flame is gold, watch out for cold!
When the flame is blue, there's no change in view!
When there's a flickering flame, expect snow or rain!
There's also a fun "Milwaukee Gas Light" app that tells you what color the flame is when you're not around!
Nothing is more Milwaukee than this little weather light that shines bright.
It even helps to guide mariners home!
Milwaukee wouldn't be the same without the unique weather light on top of the gas building.
