Portage has been an important crossroads for a very long time. Located at a spot between two important rivers, it has long been a crucial hub for transportation and trade. Today, there’s a paved pedestrian trail that offers scenic views of this historic place and a chance to experience one of Wisconsin’s great rivers. Here’s what you need to know about the Portage Levee Trail, a path that offers gorgeous Wisconsin views.
Portage is a charming city in Columbia County that has a rich history. Located at the divide between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, Native American tribes, fur traders, and early settlers used the portage route - a land connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River - to transport goods and navigate the waterways.
This strategic location played a pivotal role in the development of the region, as well as the state of Wisconsin. While the rivers and connecting canal are no longer key to trade, they are still a beautiful part of the city.
The Riverside Levee Trail is a hidden gem - it'a a 4.3-mile round trip that delivers plenty of scenic beauty. It traces the top of the massive levee that protects Portage from river flooding.
There are many places to get on the trail, but a great spot is Riverside Park, a serene 2.1-acre oasis. It was founded back in 1867, and it has a 1924 shelter that proudly bears the slogan "Where the North Begins.”
The trail is an easy path, and it’s used by people of all ages. On a nice day, you’ll see walkers, bikers, and runners, but it’s not a crowded path.
The views of the river are spectacular. There are some benches along the trail - you might want to allow some extra time to take in this gorgeous Wisconsin view.
I’ve spent some time on this trail – it’s really pretty and unlike anything in my town. Learn more about the Levee Trail on AllTrails. Looking for more Badger State adventures? Here are some amazing things to see and do in Wisconsin.
