You’ll find Rural Route 1 Popcorn on the south side of Montfort, pop. 700. It’s a town that straddles the Grant and Iowa County borders and it’s surrounded by rich farmland.
The popcorn shop’s origin story can be traced to 1906 when Elmer Biddick began growing seed corn in the nearby community of Livingston.
In 1983, the farm began experimenting with a new crop. The popcorn business was born! Today the enterprise has several hundred acres that are used to grow gourmet popcorn.
So why does the popcorn taste so good? The farm focuses on quality, rather than quantity. In other words, it bypasses high-producing hybrid varieties, in favor of popcorn with better flavor and tenderness.
While Rural Route 1 Popcorn offers the classic varieties of white and yellow popcorn, available in package sizes ranging from two to 25 pounds, it also tantalizes taste buds with a wide array of ready-to-eat flavors. Among the most popular is the Ivory Almond K'Nuckle, a creamy blend of popcorn, almonds, and luscious white fudge.
Whether you buy it in tins, buckets, boxes, or bags, their popcorn makes for the perfect gift. But you may want to keep this popcorn to yourself!
I have family that lives close to Montfort – I know what to get them for a gift!
