For more than 80 years, things have been very sweet in the Milwaukee area, as four generations of the Grebe family have been delivering some of the best bakery items in the world! Feeling hungry? Read on to see why you need to pay Grebe’s Bakery in West Allis, Wisconsin, a visit.
Grebe’s Bakery is located in West Allis, a suburb on Milwaukee’s west side. It’s a bakery with a very long history in the Milwaukee area.
The bakery’s roots can be traced to 1937, when Irene Grebe began baking and selling butterhorns and other treats to help the family make a living.
Her baked items were a big hit and grew to include 16 retail operations! In the 1950s, Walter James Grebe (Jim) took over the business and launched a big wholesale operation in the Milwaukee area and beyond. Customers could now purchase Grebe’s items in grocery stores and gas stations.
Jim’s son Jim Jr. eventually took over operations and today, his sons, Brandon and Colton, are continuing Grebe’s success. You’ll find Grebe’s items at the Wisconsin State Fair, as well as retail locations like Speedway, Sentry, Sendik’s, Woodman’s, and Piggly Wiggly. The company employs 200 bakers and produces 7,000 doughnuts daily.
If you can, pay the West Allis bakery a visit. Try their Milwaukee-style crullers or choose from 30 different doughnut varieties! They also have delicious hand-iced sugar cookies as well a big selection of breads and rolls.
If you can’t make it to West Allis, you may still be able to get your Grebe’s fix – the business remains a big distributor and now delivers to hundreds of retail locations in the Midwest.
Grebe’s Bakery is open Tuesday-Sunday. If you’re an early riser, you’re in luck – the bakery opens at 5 a.m.! Learn more on the bakery’s website. If you love discovering the next great doughnut, here’s an awesome road trip you’ll want to take.
