Just outside Madison, Wisconsin is a little slice of paradise. Verona’s Fireman’s park is a place that had a modest start but has become a go-to spot for summer fun and relaxation. It’s the perfect place to cool off on a warm summer day and it offers something for visitors of all ages.
The park is located on the south side of Verona. It’s only a 20-minute drive from downtown Madison but it feels like another world.
The park had a humble beginning. It was originally a rock quarry. It became a swimming spot for locals when it flooded with water.
In recent years, the community has put a lot of resources into transforming the park into a recreational destination.
The park now has a huge 3,600 square-foot interactive Vortex Splash Pad. There’s also a large playground, a new park shelter, and athletic fields.
But the beach and little lake here are the stars of the show. It’s a fun and refreshing spot on hot summer days.
The park is also the site of the Wisconsin Triterium Triathlon. An Ironman triathlon course also passes near the park and the lake is a popular early-season training spot for local triathletes. You might be able to see some athletes training while you relax on the beach!
Verona's Fireman's Park splash pad is open from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. daily, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The park's beach is open from noon-6 p.m. There's a small admission charge to access the beach. Arrive early to get a good spot on the sand. Interested in more great places to beat the heat in Wisconsin? Check out these little-known beaches.
