Stewarts Original Hot Dogs is a Huntington, West Virginia institution. Opened in 1932 as a root beer and popcorn stand, Stewarts has changed much in some ways from its earliest days. However, other things haven't changed one bit. The restaurant is still bright orange. It still serves some of the best root beer in town. And, in 1933, when Stewarts added hot dogs to the menu, the restaurant served the dogs with a chili sauce that was so good, the recipe has been handed down as-is for four generations.
Welcome to Stewarts Original Hot Dogs...
... where you can get a hot dog topped with some of the best chili sauce in West Virginia.
This special, mouth-watering, secret-recipe chili sauce was first made for the restaurant back in 1933 by Gertrude Mandt, who originally owned Stewarts with her husband John.
And today, four generations and nearly a hundred years later, that same secret-recipe chili sauce still makes its appearance on Stewarts hot dogs, and it's just as good now as it always has been.
There are other good things that haven't changed about Stewarts since the early days as well.
The Mandts made the very first hot dog they served at their little orange drive-in with meat from Huntington's own S.S. Logan Packing Company. They bought their hot dog buns from Huntington's own Heiner's Bakery. And they still use these two Huntington businesses to supply their meat and bread to this very day.
That's one reason Stewarts Original Hot Dogs was able to add another Huntington institution to its list of business partners: Marshall University. In 1988, Stewart's Original Hot Dogs became the official hot dog of Marshall University sports.
Over the years, some things have changed, though. One is that now, Stewarts Original Hot Dogs offers shipping. That's right, they'll ship hot dogs to you anywhere in the United States, and even overseas!
Another change for good at Stewarts is that their menu has expanded to include a good deal more than just hot dogs, root beer, and popcorn. Still, hot dogs and root beer remain the staples of a true Stewarts meal experience.
