There's no better way to see our state's beautiful landscape than to take a hike. West Virginia is peppered with countless trails that will take you all over the countryside, showcasing some of the state's most incredible views, and this particular hiking trail in West Virginia is one of the best.
The High Rocks Trail is located in Pocahontas County, and it's easy to find.
The trailhead is visible from the road, and there's a little parking lot, too.
Nestled within the Monongahela National Forest, the 3-mile trail is great for both kids and adults, so bring the whole family along for an adventure.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but it really shines during the fall.
As you traverse through the forest, keep an eye (and an ear) out for the many songbirds in the area.
They'll score a beautiful soundtrack to your hike. Black-capped chickadees and Rufous-sided Towhee are two of the most popular songbirds you’ll see, but you might also get some rhythm added from the pileated woodpecker which is often sighted here.
While you will be gaining some elevation along the trail (376 feet), it’s really not that bad when you consider the view that’s waiting for you at the end of the trail.
At the very top, you’ll be granted a stunning 180-degree view of the Little Levels Valley and the surrounding Appalachian Mountains.
