There are plenty of tasty restaurants in West Virginia. There are also plenty of small communities tucked away throughout the state. But it's not often that the two come together. It's even less often that a tiny, unincorporated town can support three of the best restaurants in the state! But that's exactly the case in Gap Mills, West Virginia.
Gap Mills is a small, historic, unincorporated community established in 1775 in Monroe County, West Virginia. Located along Route 3, it's so small that it has no stoplights. But it does have restaurants - in fact, this dot on a map has three of the tastiest eateries you can find in the Mountain State.
As you travel east on West Virginia Route 3 into Gap Mills, the first restaurant you'll pass (on the left-hand side of the road) is the Gap Mills Diner. If you're not careful, you'll miss it - the outside doesn't look like much.
The parking lot is always full, though, during hours of operation!
And if you enter the middle door, you'll find a clean, cozy, friendly restaurant waiting inside. Everyone knows everyone else here, and they're all happy to say hi.
Gap Mills Diner is located at 7887 Sweet Springs Valley Road.
Don't leave without trying one of the delicious burgers the restaurant is famous for, made with a pound of fresh, local, juicy beef.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days per week.
Less than a mile east along Route 3 from the diner, on the opposite side of the road, is another restaurant: a deli that also sells bulk food, furniture, and more. It's the Mennonite run Cheese 'n' More store.
The address is 5521 Sweet Springs Valley Road. Cheese 'n' More is closed on Sundays.
Grab a sandwich, some potato or pasta salad, and a soda from the deli to take on a picnic to nearby Moncove Lake or to eat at the picnic table in the yard of the store itself, right along Kitchen Creek.
You'll also find spices, bulk candy, baking supplies, hand-crafted furniture (including lighthouses, patio furniture, mailboxes, playground sets, and windmills), and more.
For dessert, head diagonally east across Route 3 (you can even walk) to what used to be Kitchen Creek Bakery but is now known as A Taste of Eggcellence.
The bakery is at 8930 Sweet Springs Valley Road.
The name has changed, but you can still find some tasty desserts inside this tiny little shop, including pies and cookies as well as everyone's favorite: pepperoni rolls.
Note that the bakery is only open on Fridays and Saturdays as of this writing.
