There are some beautiful train rides through the Mountain State. West Virginia boasts such attractions as the Cass Scenic Railroad, New River Train Excursions, and the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. And that's not all!
There's also Amtrak. Amtrak trains criss-cross the entire United States, including the state of West Virginia.
In fact, the most famous Amtrak route spans the state of West Virginia from Huntington to White Sulphur Springs, as one portion of the larger, multi-state Cardinal Route. The Cardinal has been praised as one of the prettiest train rides in the nation, expecially in the fall.
And while you can choose to take the Cardinal all the way from New York to Chicago, that's not the only option. So if you don't have quite that much time, you could shorten the trip considerably...
... by opting to ride the train just through West Virginia's New River Gorge. Catch the Amtrack at the Charleston station bright and early in the morning, for example, and hop off to stretch your legs for a few hours in Hinton before catching the return train back to Charleston that evening.
A ride from Charleston to Hinton will take you right through the New River Gorge - and cost you only about $11, one way.
Of course, you can customize the trip, making it a little longer or a little shorter depending on what suits your needs.
You'll also want to pay attention to time of year. West Virginia is worth exploring in any season, but fall, when the leaves turn the mountain slopes brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red, is an especially dramatic time for a train ride.
