West Virginia offers so much adventure above ground and below. The Mountain State has some of the coolest caves in the world. Are you ready for some adventure surrounded by the cool dark earth? If so, these caves are waiting for you!
1. Seneca Caverns
Seneca Caverns are show caves located in Germany Valley not far from the town of Riverton. The Seneca Indians used the cave for ceremonies. It has been used as a commercial cave since the early 1930s. The path into the caverns drops 165 feet below its entrance. Teter Hall is the largest room in the cave, which measures 60 feet tall and 60 feet wide in several places. The rock formations are amazing. Be sure to wear old clothes because you will get dirty exploring this incredible cave.
2. Mystic Cave
Mystic Cave, located in Pendelton County, has two entrances. It also has a medium sized stream passing through it. The cave has stunning waterfalls. Be prepared to get wet while exploring the Mystic Cave. The second passage has some water holes that are waist deep. The cave is closed from April 1st through September 15th because of bats. Endangered Virginia long-eared bats live in the cave; the time period the cave is closed is the bats' mating season.
3. Piercy's Mill Cave
The Piercy’s Mill Cave, located in located in Piercy’s Mill, is one of West Virginia’s shortest caves. Despite traveling just under a mile, the formations inside are remarkable. Be sure to wear water resistant boots because a large stream flows out of the cave's entrance. A side passage inside the cave leads to a rimstone dam room.
4. Lost World Cavern
Lost World Caverns are located just outside of Lewisburg. It is an underground series of natural caves that descend 120 feet below the Earth’s surface. The caves stay at a comfortable 52 degrees and offer many incredible formations.
5. Rehoboth Church Cave
Rehoboth Cave is approximately one and a half miles long. The beautiful cave has only one entrance, but several side passages.
6. Salt Cave & Spa
The Salt Cave and Spa is located in White Sulphur Springs. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to relax and re-energize inside the salt cave with salt halotherapy.
