Every Washingtonian has heard of the San Juan Islands, and many of us have visited Whidbey or Bainbridge a time or two. But unless you live in Western Washington, you may not be aware of Vashon Island's existence. And while it doesn't have all the attractions and amenities our larger islands do, it's a delightfully underrated place that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after you visit.
Vashon Island is located in King County in the midpoint of southern Puget Sound in between Seattle and Tacoma.
But you'd never guess this peaceful place was nestled in between to of our largest cities.
About 10,600 people live on the island, and it's a quiet, rural community.
But quiet doesn't mean dull -- Vashon has a lot to offer, and you should definitely visit.
First, book a stay at the Lodges on Vashon, a property that manages to be both elegant and rustic.
You'll love relaxing in your private lodge after a day exploring the island.
Each lodge has amenities from local artisans and a wet bar, and many of them have soaking tubs.
Take some time to explore the charming and quirky shops Vashon has to offer.
The local personalities really shine through.
Visiting Point Robinson Park is a must.
The Point Robinson Lighthouse is a historic gem that has been fully restored.
Wine lovers can enjoy a nice tasting at the beautiful Palouse Winery (pictured here) or at Vashon Winery or Andrew Will.
There's no shortage of vino on Vashon, and it's all fantastic.
For such a small town, the dining scene here is pretty impressive.
Make sure to dine at May Kitchen + Bar for some of the best Thai food you'll ever have (and great service as well). This eatery has won numerous local awards, and they are worthy of the praise.
And of course, nothing beats a quiet beach stroll.
Vashon has several public beaches, like KVI Beach and Lisabeula Park.
This is just a fraction of the fun things you'll find to do on Vashon Island. It's definitely one of Washington's top hidden gems.
