While it's true that every state has its beauty, not every state has a Bavarian village. And while Leavenworth might seem a bit campy and overhyped to some, there really is a lot to love about it. After all, how many places in Washington (or anywhere else, for that matter) can make you feel like you're in Europe when you're really a few hours away from home? We happen to think Leavenworth makes a perfect day trip destination.
Leavenworth is a small, picturesque village that will give you a little glimpse of Germany -- no passport required.
The fact that it sits nestled in the Cascade Mountains is just a beautiful bonus.
This area wasn't always Bavarian-themed.
When the railroad re-routed its rails and moved out of town after the logging industry dried up, the locals decided to completely renovate the town to make it look more German in hopes of getting some tourism to keep them afloat. And while this was quite a feat, to say they have succeeded would be an understatement.
These days, Leavenworth is known as one of the top destinations in the Pacific Northwest for shopping, dining, beer and wine drinking, and more...
... and the absolutely enchanting Village of Lights makes it one of the top holiday season destinations in the entire world.
If you've never been to Leavenworth in the winter, you're really missing out.
So, what's the first thing you should do on a day trip to Leavenworth?
That depends on your interests and the time of year. However, we always recommend grabbing a German meal, like a bratwurst at München Haus.
The shops in Leavenworth are second to none, especially if you enjoy Christmas decor.
Spend a little time exploring Kris Kringle if you'd like to get into the holiday spirit, even if it's the middle of summer.
The beer is always flowing here, especially during Oktoberfest. But did you know downtown Leavenworth has dozens of tasting rooms for local wine?
Chelan is one of our top wine regions, and you'll love finding your new favorite.
We're truly lucky that Leavenworth is right here in our state since people have been known to travel from all over the West to see it.
The next time you find yourself with a day off and no plans, drive over and fall in love with this beautiful place all over again.
