Here in Washington, camping is not solely a summer activity. And while you certainly won't find any full campgrounds in the dead of winter, there are parts of the state where the climate stays mild enough to host campers year-round. One of those spots is the Hoh Campground, which happens to be located in North America's only temperate rainforest.
Note that the Hoh Rainforest does close on occasion due to flood warnings and other weather-related issues. But when Mother Nature allows, you can camp here anytime.
The Hoh Rainforest sits on the west side of Olympic National Park.
While it's only a two-hour drive from Port Angeles, you'll feel you're in your own world when you're here. The lush, green canopy of mosses and ferns is brought to you by the 140+ inches of rain the area sees every year, and it's absolutely magical.
The Hoh Campground is located right on the banks of the glacially fed Hoh River, which is where the rainforest got its name.
This is a fantastic base camp for anyone who wants to explore the Hoh for more than a day (and rest assured, you'll want more than a day).
The campground features 88 spacious tent / car sites, and each one has a picnic table and a fire grate.
There are also several restrooms, potable water, and bear-proof food storage boxes.
There are no campsites here that are specifically for RVs, and no RV hook ups, although the campground does have a dump station.
You can also bring your pets along with you, but they have to stay on leashes, and they're not allowed on the trails or underdeveloped areas.
Despite this being a fairly large campground, you'll enjoy plenty of privacy when you're here.
And considering the Hoh is home to what is thought to be the most silent spot in America, you can count on plenty of peace and quiet.
Obviously, the most popular time to camp here is the summer. But you'd be surprised by the off-season interest.
There's just something appealing about cozying up by the fireplace in the late autumn, sipping a hot beverage and enjoying the unbelievably fresh air.
The Hoh Campground is the perfect place to stay when you're exploring the Olympic Peninsula.
Make your reservations online, and make them early if you're going during peak travel times. It fills up fast.
