Port Townsend is a beautiful, charming, beloved treasure. Steeped in local history and full of world-class dining, unique shops, miles of beaches, and a Victorian vibe, it's no wonder so many Washingtonians see it as the ideal weekend getaway destination.
The Belmont is a historic Victorian-style hotel that sits right on the water in the heart of town. And if you want an authentic Port Townsend experience, we highly recommend a stay here.
The Belmont was constructed in 1889 by George Sterming, who had a lifelong dream of owning such a place.
Sterming’s vision was to have The Belmont Saloon on the main floor and the hotel above it.
Sterming was a shrewd and experienced saloon owner, and he catered mainly to the maritime trade.
The saloon guests often included sea captains, cargo brokers, adventure seekers, gamblers and hustlers. As one might imagine, it was a lively place.
But that couldn't be further from the truth today -- The Belmont is quiet and peaceful.
And thanks to its waterfront location, it seems like an especially serene spot to stay.
The hotel underwent a total renovation in 2018, and plenty of modern amenities were added.
That being said, the property still maintains its historic charms. The modern charms simply include WiFi and other conveniences. One thing the rooms don't have is TVs, ensuring a nice, quiet stay.
Of course, as with most older properties, especially in Port Townsend, there are rumors that the hotel is haunted.
However, if that's true, the spirits are both subtle and friendly. Unlike a few of the other hotels in town, no one seems to have experienced anything too intense.
The rooms at The Belmont range from cozy King rooms to larger rooms with lofts.
You'll either have a view of the waterfront or historic downtown Port Townsend, and you can't go wrong either way.
