Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. After attending university, Andrea devoted themselves to writing full-time. They're thrilled to represent Washington for Only In Your State while pursuing other professional and personal projects. They currently reside in Olympia, where they enjoy leaf-blowing their yard, perfecting homemade ramen, cuddling with their three tiny dogs, and feeding their pufferfish, Sea Biscuit.
After living in Seattle for the better part of a decade, I’m what you’d call inured to the cafe lifestyle. Whether you want bright and tall windows, cozy wood paneling, or espresso served with an eye-roll and a side of grunge, I have suggestions in spades. Now that it’s summer, coffee shops that allow guests to enjoy the good weather are in high demand. But possibly my favorite Seattle cafe with outdoor seating is located in a plant nursery.
Just north of the Crown Hill neighborhood is a local gem called Swansons Nursery. Whether you're a plant or coffee lover, this spot should be on your radar. You'll love visiting this nursery any time of year. Even in the winter, when you may not be working hard in the garden, Swansons has Christmas trees, wreaths, and even reindeer!
But what many Seattleites may not know is that— tucked in the middle of the nursery property— is the charming Swansons Cafe. Boasting towering greenhouse ceilings, it's the airy coffee shop of any garden enthusiast's dreams.
It's difficult, if not impossible, to get away with subpar coffee in Seattle. As such, expect the espresso drinks here to hit all the criteria of a balanced brew.
If you're craving something more substantial, Swansons also offers breakfast and lunch from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. I'm partial to the chicken sandwich, prepared with bacon, sautéed red onions, lettuce, and local Beecher's Flagship Cheddar. Prepare for a wait if you plan to dine in, especially on hectic weekends, or opt to take your meal to go and stroll through the beautiful nursery, sandwich in hand.
Perhaps more than lunch, however, I'm a sucker for good gelato. Swansons sources theirs from another of my Seattle favorites, the Nutty Squirrel. If you're feeling adventurous, ask for a scoop of pistachio with a shot of espresso for a twist on the classic affogato.
You'll love strolling through the nursery grounds, but nab a table if you can. Expert gardeners carefully maintain the cafe interior, and lush greenery flourishes wherever you look. This vibrant atmosphere is why— while I love visiting Swansons in summer— I also love popping by in the middle of a gray winter.
Fellow fish enthusiasts will marvel at the healthy koi residing in the cafe's pond. As cute as they are and as much as they might beg for snacks, you're not allowed to feed them, but watching their peaceful orbits in the water is incredibly relaxing.
