Point Roberts in Washington offers a whimsical, family-friendly hike called the Enchanted Forest Trail, accessible only through Canada or by private transport.
Did you know there's a (very) small part of Washington that can only be accessed through the Canadian border or by a small plane or private boat? Point Roberts was created when the U.S. and Canada cut off a small end of the Tsawwassen Peninsula while they were deciding on their borders. This left a small piece of land that belongs to us, although it isn't exactly easy to reach. It's the Enchanted Forest in Washington.
But we'll give you one great reason to visit Point Roberts: the Enchanted Forest Trail. If you have children, or if you're a kid at heart yourself and are looking for fun things to do in Washington, this is a place you'll want to explore.
As you can see, Point Roberts has a pretty unique location.
Just park in the Baker Field parking lot off of Benson Road, follow the road to the far end of the field, and veer left. Then, just follow the signs.
The trail was designed to be a collaborative effort between the Point Roberts Park and Recreation District and various local artists, craftsmen, and children.
And even though Point Roberts isn't easy to reach, the journey is part of the fun. By the time you arrive, you'll feel like you're in another world—especially if you find this trail.
This easy, free hike is totally family-friendly, and little ones love discovering all the details.

1. Greenwater Lakes Trail – Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest
For a serene forest experience, head to Greenwater Lakes Trail, nestled within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The trail stretches for over 10 miles so you can choose your own adventure length, but even a short walk provides beautiful river views and an escape into Washington’s lush greenery.
3. Sauk Mountain Trail – North Cascades National Park
For a less-traveled but equally rewarding hike in the North Cascades, Sauk Mountain Trail offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. This moderately challenging trail features a series of switchbacks that climb through wildflower meadows and offer breathtaking views all the way up. While the trail can be steep in sections, the reward at the top is a sweeping vista of the North Cascades, Sauk River Valley, and even glimpses of Mount Baker on clear days. The trail is quieter than many in the area, making it a peaceful alternative for those seeking a scenic escape.
Staircase Rapids Loop in Olympic National Park is a hidden gem that showcases the lush, moss-draped forests typical of the region. Located in the quieter Staircase area of the park, this 2-mile loop winds along the Skokomish River, with views of the rapids and ancient trees. It’s a relatively easy trail that provides a magical, fern-filled atmosphere without the crowds found in more popular areas of the park. It’s an ideal spot to experience the unique rainforests of the Olympics at a leisurely pace.
Tucked away in the Central Cascades, Barclay Lake Trail is a short, family-friendly hike that offers solitude and stunning views of Mount Baring reflected in the lake.
