Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. After attending university, Andrea devoted themselves to writing full-time. They're thrilled to represent Washington for Only In Your State while pursuing other professional and personal projects. They currently reside in Olympia, where they enjoy leaf-blowing their yard, perfecting homemade ramen, cuddling with their three tiny dogs, and feeding their pufferfish, Sea Biscuit.
Just yesterday, I wore a tank top. Sure, temperatures were just peaking over 60 degrees, but the sun was shining, and, like any self-respecting Washingtonian, I’m all too eager to hang up my raincoat for warm-weather garb! Summer means different things to everyone, but to me, it means berries. Not only does our state boast an array of delicious native berries, butwe’ve got farms where the public can pick their own! For the prettiest blueberry U-pick in Washington, I recommend North Bend’s Bybee Farms.
Nestled beneath the shadow of statuesque Mount Si, Bybee Farms is easily one of Washington's most picturesque berry patches. It's also one that's special to my heart. There are photographs of me picking berries here— well, eating them mostly— when I was only five years old.
Bybee cultivates six varieties of blueberries, each with its own texture and flavor. My favorite is the Jersey, one of the oldest blueberry types, grown at the farm since 1946. It's the star of late-season patches, meaning it's widely available for procrastinators like me.
The farm provides buckets for visitors, but I like to bring my own cardboard boxes to transport berries home. Also included in my list of things to bring along: a podcast or chatty friend, a large bottle of water, sunscreen, and good outdoor shoes. You can easily spend hours here.
You'll want to take your time. It might seem monotonous, but berry-picking is incredibly healthy. Not only are blueberries high in antioxidants, but spending time in nature is scientifically proven to impart various health benefits, from reduced anxiety to lowering blood pressure.
I won't say I've made it out to a U-pick every year, but I always regret missing out when the season ends. We Washingtonians tend to hibernate over winter and pack our schedules in summertime. With a hectic calendar, I savor moments of slowing down.
For its incredible beauty, delicious produce, and treasured memories, I choose Bybee if I only have the time to visit one U-pick before summer ends. Though it might mean fewer berries for me, I highly recommend you swing by this season.
Are you looking for a beautiful blueberry U-pick in Washington this summer? Check out Bybee Farms. With Mount Si as the backdrop and the charm of nearby North Bend, it’s the perfect warm-weather excursion.
