Virginia's beaches are simply breathtaking, no matter the time of year. While most of them share a similar geological composition, there are a few that stand out as totally unique. One such place is the little-known Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area. A rare vision in this part of the country, the 50-ft sand dunes make for a breathtaking sight. Here's more on the history of this natural phenomenon and why you'll want to plan your trip soon:
Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area is nearly 300-acres of preserved land along the Chesapeake Bay. This beautiful spot is named for the impressive fifty-foot-tall sand dunes that decorate the horizon. In fact, these make up the highest points on the otherwise flat landscape of the Bay.
A visit to the sand dunes will yield an experience unlike any other in the area. The land takes a drastic shift in its makeup and reveals ponds and scrubby pines amidst the dunes. In fact, it appears like something from the West Coast.
It is estimated that the dunes have quite a history; some believe they’ve been part of the landscape for 10,000 years. The trees scattered along the beaches include red cedars, loblolly pines, and oaks. It’s also an incredible spot for watching birds, namely falcons, hawks and songbirds.
In addition to the sand dunes, the beach itself is a terrific place to spend the day. Visitors enjoy strolling the pristine shores or choosing one of the area’s three trails to explore. Along the trails, you’ll find interpretive signs outlining some of the beach’s unique features.
The shoreline belonging to Savage Neck Dunes stretches for a mile. Another characteristic sight is a scattering of dead trees. This is a result of the serious erosion this part of the coast has faced.
