Hike any of Virginia's beautiful trails and you're in for an incredible experience. Winding through the beautiful terrain of southwestern Virginia, Blacksburg's Huckleberry Trail is no exception. This former railway line takes hikers and bikers through seven miles of gorgeous terrain, including a foot bridge, beautiful valleys, and even a coal mining heritage park. So if you're looking for an memorable hike that also happens to be easily accessible, the Huckleberry Trail should be your next adventure.
The Huckleberry Trail is seven miles long and connects the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg.
What once served as a railway has since been converted into a beautiful rail-trail with a 12-foot wide asphalt surface.
The name of the trail stems from its purpose as a railway, when passengers would make frequent stops along the way to pick huckleberries.
The line was abandoned in 1967 and the trail, retaining its Huckleberry nickname, was completed by 1998.
Towards the beginning of the trail, there's a unique underpass which takes hikers under Route 460.
Perhaps the most unique stretch of the trail is the section that crosses over the Norfolk Southern Railway.
Approaching this bridge, hikers can marvel at its unique geometric build and the gorgeous view it provides.
Just outside of Merrimac, the trail also passes through a fascinating park known as the Coal Mining Heritage Park, where hikers can learn more about the former Merrimack Mine.
Depending on the time of year, you might even catch a glimpse of beautiful blooms along the way.
One of the best parts about the Huckleberry Trail is the community that cares for it. This ensure that the trail is always well-maintained and continuously grows.
In fact, there are plans to extend this trail even further and perhaps create a connection to the New River Trail.
