If you've lived in Virginia for long enough, you've probably caught on to the fact that some of our best restaurants are located in unsuspecting historic buildings. One such case is Richmond's famous Tobacco Company, which, as you might have guessed, has an extensive history with the tobacco history. Here's more on how you can dine in this beautifully restored tobacco warehouse:
Please note: Due to a recent fire, the Tobacco Restaurant is currently closed until further notice. Updates will be announced on the company's Facebook Page, which can be accessed here.
The Tobacco Restaurant is located in the vibrant downtown Richmond area known as the Shockoe Slip.
This cobblestone area dates back to the 1600s, when the Slip headquartered the cotton and tobacco industries along the James River. Despite being burned to ashes during the Civil War, this neighborhood retains a distinctive historic feel.
The building that serves as the iconic Tobacco Company was originally a warehouse constructed in 1866. The columns and brickwork that you'll notice today are all original.
While the tobacco history is truly unique, perhaps the most fascinating feature of the building is the massive brass chandelier that once hung in the Federal Reserve Bank in Cincinnati.
The Tobacco Company is also renowned for its extensive menu. Particularly popular is the prime rib, she-crab soup, and famous butter cake.
Other delicious orders include speciality fish tacos...
...homemade pasta specials...
...and mouthwatering pecan pie. It's truly southern dining at its finest.
So if you're looking for a unique historical experience combined with delicious southern cooking, you'll want to make a visit to the Tobacco Company.
The Tobacco Company is located at 1201 E Cary St, Richmond, VA 23219. Have you dined here before? What was your favorite thing on the menu? We'd love to hear from you!
