There are countless day trip destinations in Virginia, and all of them are worthwhile. Today's feature spot is one that's relatively little-known but promises tons of adventure. New River Trail State Park is located in southwestern Virginia and, as you probably guessed from the name, follows a particularly scenic portion of the New River.
Welcome to New River Trail State Park! This 57-mile linear park follows the New River on a former stretch of an abandoned railroad right-of-way.
To explore this park is to see some of the most beautiful riverfront scenery that Virginia has to offer. Breathtaking bridges and mountain tunnels will leave you impressed on every level.
Photographed below is the iconic Hiwassee Bridge, which measures 951 feet in length and makes for a gorgeous photo op.
Despite passing by truly dramatic scenery, the trail itself is rather gentle, making it a great option for bikers, hikers, and families.
It's also a great trail to take in any season. During fall, the vivid colors of the trees add an ethereal elegance to the experience and in the spring, you can look forward to bursts of wildflowers lining the trail.
Of course, summer might be the best time of year to enjoy the New River Trail. Hop in a canoe and you'll get a whole new perspective of the landscape!
No matter whether you're exploring by foot or by boat, you'll agree that there are endless wonders awaiting at this relatively undiscovered state park.
