What would Virginia be without the spa-like natural waters that have been enjoyed for hundreds of years? Hot springs and warm springs can be found most abundantly in the very towns that are named after them. Chances are, you've heard of the Jefferson Pools near the Homestead. Blowing Springs is also located in Warm Springs, Virginia as part of the Blowing Springs Natural Recreation Area. Blowing Springs is not a hot spring, but is actually caused by a unique phenomenon that'll have you planning your next camping trip ASAP.
Located off Virginia Highway 39, you'll find Blowing Springs Campground, which offers several campsites in addition to the main attraction. If you can brave those windy mountain roads, you're in for a real treat.
A natural spring is defined as a site where underground water flows and comes forth freely from the ground. That means outside air temperatures generally won't affect the water temperature. Virginia has several of these sites scattered around the area.
What makes Blowing Springs so amazing is its very namesake: a natural air duct that blows out air out of the rocks at a constant 58 degrees. Depending on which season you visit, the air will feel warm or cool (relative to do the outside temperature). Imagine visiting these grounds mid-August, having a constant and natural source of cool air to enjoy.
You'll also be delighted to find several deep wading and swimming places along the creek. Keep in mind that natural springs aren't hot springs, and the water won't necessarily be warm!
The recreational area that surrounds Blowing Springs makes for a truly unique and primitive experience. The campgrounds are well maintained and offer endless activities, including fishing in Back Creek, whitewater paddling, and hiking.
Doesn't the water flowing over this riverbed look delightfully inviting?
