The Appalachian Trail is arguably the most famous thru-hike in the U.S. Spanning from Georgia to Maine, it covers approximately 2,000 miles of rugged mountain scenery. And Virginia just so happens to be home to over a quarter of these scenic miles. Today’s feature adventure is one that will take you to the heart of the trail, where you’ll approach the tallest point in Virginia and pass right by a fascinating trail shelter. Here’s more on the Appalachian Trail shelter hike that’s sure to become a new favorite.
The Thomas Knob Shelter is located right along the Appalachian Trail. For those making the trek from Georgia to Maine, it's a welcome sight, especially on a cold night.
The shelter isn't just functional -- it's two stories and can sleep up to 16 people -- but it's also beautiful. Many have noted that the nearby view is one of the most beautiful along the entire trail.
If you're interested in hiking to the shelter, you'll want to take the Mount Rogers Trail. Hiking through temperate rainforest, you'll feel as though you're somewhere else altogether.
As you approach the peak of Mount Rogers, keep in mind that it's entirely enclosed. In other words, there's really no view from the actual top of the mountain.
Continuing along the Appalachian Trail, you'll eventually reach Thomas Knob Shelter. Given that it's right on the trail, it's virtually impossible to miss!
There are plenty of campsites around the shelter as well. But if you're planning to stay the night, it's recommended to use the shelter so you don't have to brave the elements!
