1. Scott's Run Nature Preserve
Scott's Run is a nature-filled oasis not far from Washington D.C., yet you'll feel worlds away from the city as you explore these secluded trails. In the 1970s, this area of land was spared from urban development and originally called the Dranesville District Park. Visit today and prepare to be enchanted by expansive views of the Potomac as well as the magnificent waterfall accessed via Scott's Run River Trail. Hikers should wear appropriate shoes in case the trails get slippery. While you're there, check out this easy waterfall hike that will quickly become one of your favorites.
2. Meadowlark Botanical Garden
If your idea of the perfect outing involves meandering through a garden amidst beautiful blooms and a forest canopy, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens belongs on your radar. As the second stop on our hidden gems road trip, this landmark is a beloved place for flower enthusiasts and nature conservationists alike. Visitors will enjoy shaded walking trails, beautiful lakes, birds, butterflies, and countless varieties of plants, flowers, and foliage. It's easy to see why Meadowlark Botanical Garden is such a favorite!
3. Chapman's Mill
Constructed in the 1750s, Chapman's Mill (also known as Beverley's Mill) is a former grist mill that has witnessed decades of history. In fact, it was at the heart of the Civil War Battle of Thoroughfare Gap on August 28, 1862. Tragically, the stone mill suffered a fire in 1998. Today, visitors will find the ruins to be both haunting and mesmerizing. The mill is privately managed and preservation efforts mean it's not open every day to the public. Be sure to visit the website before planning your visit.
4. Burnside Farms
Situated on eight pristine acres in Nokesville, Virginia, await the flower fields at Burnside Farms. This family-run operation welcomes visitors from all over the state to enjoy impressive varieties of blooms throughout the season. Mid-July marks the beginning of sunflower season. Whether you're interested in picking your own bright flowers or attempting the country's only sunflower maze, you won't be disappointed by your visit here. Learn more about what makes Burnside Farms such a magical day trip destination.
5. Sky Meadows State Park
Spread over 1,800 acres of beautiful rolling hills and abundant farmland, Sky Meadows State Park is perhaps one of the most peaceful of Virginia's state parks. Wide-open space means there's plenty of room to roam. The park offers nine hiking trails to choose from, ranging in length and difficulty. No matter how long you visit, you will feel refreshed in every way by these pristine natural surroundings. Plus, this beautiful state park in Virginia is filled with beginner-friendly trails. All the more reason to love Sky Meadows State Park!
6. Bear's Den Scenic Overlook
The short but scenic Bear's Den Scenic Overlook Trail is perfect for stretching your legs and enjoying a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This trail isn't far from a major road, which is perfectly convenient for the purpose of our road trip. However, hikers should know that this trail can be crowded during peak times. Therefore, it's best to visit during a weekday if possible.
7. Rust Sanctuary
Located in Leesburg, Virginia, Rust Sanctuary is the location of the Audubon Naturalist Society. Visitors will find 68 acres of wooded trails to meander down while enjoying seclusion and the surrounding natural beauty. Throughout the year, the park offers programs dedicated to helping the community learn more about wildlife, flora, and fauna. Learn more about planning your visit when you check out Rust Sanctuary's official listing on NOVA Parks.
8. Stone Tower Winery
Last but certainly not least or our adventure to see hidden gems in Virginia, Stone Tower Winery is the final stop on our hidden gems road trip through Virginia. So much hiking exploring is bound to have worked up an appetite for a bite to eat and a glass of local Virginia wine. The winery specializes in Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and the classic Bordeaux red varietals. Plus, its location atop Hogback Mountain makes for some pretty incredible views.
