Each state has its list of top must-see attractions. For Virginia, the list typically includes Shenandoah National Park, Natural Bridge, and Luray Caverns. While these sites are certainly worth the trip, there are countless lesser-known attractions that are equally as impressive. The town of Damascus, Virginia recently made the list of top lesser-known destinations in the U.S., and we couldn't agree more. Though small in size, this town has tons of character, outdoor activities, and picturesque views to offer. Here's more about the town of Damascus:
Lovingly referred to as Trail Town USA, Damascus is an adventure lover's paradise. If you ever have the chance to visit this beautiful Blue Ridge town, you're in for a treat.
The town is traversed by no less than seven major trails, some of which include the Appalachian Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Trans-America National Bicycle Trail, and the Iron Mountain Trail. Indeed, a significant portion of visitors arrive in Damascus via foot or bicycle.
This hidden gem of a town is so immersed in outdoor culture that it holds a festival each year known as Trail Days. The world's largest backpacking event, the festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to Virginia each year.
There are so many recreational opportunities to choose from that the options can be nearly overwhelming.
One iconic experience is the 10-mile loop in the Grayson Highlands. This beloved park is famous for its mountain views and wild ponies, and the loop will lead you to the most breathtaking vistas.
The 10-mile loop consists of Horse Trail East to Wilson Creek, the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Spur trail, and the Cabin Creek Trail. Be sure to allow plenty of time to complete the hike and don't forget to pack all of the essentials!
Equally epic is the Virginia Creeper Trail, which connects the town of Damascus with Abingdon. This converted railway covers beautiful farmland, streams, and bridges over the course of 35 miles.
Of course, there are plenty of other shorter hikes and bike rides that visitors can enjoy too. Truly, there's an option for everyone. Not to mention all of the lovely cafes and restaurants in town.
