Here's more on what to expect from your visit as well as fun things to do in Big Island, Virginia.
Big Island is not an official town, but rather a census-designated place tucked away along the bank of the James River.
The area can be accessed just north of Lynchburg and is named for a tiny island upstream that is currently uninhabited.
Through buildings and streets may be sparse, Big Island is still extraordinary for its natural landscape.
As you can see, the combination of the James River along with the Blue Ridge Mountains makes for a vision that belongs on a postcard.
The area is just a stone’s throw away from the Blue Ridge Parkway, which lends itself to all sorts of outdoor exploration.
One of the closest areas for hiking is Otter Creek. This 3.5-mile trail is a lovely introduction to both the Blue Ridge Parkway and the James River.
If you don't have time for a proper hike, walking up to the canal and bridge will provide an equally amazing view.

And the mountains aren't far away either. Just twenty miles via Route 122 is the beautiful Sharp Top Mountain.
What’s especially unique about Big Island is its relatively low elevation. Less than 700 feet above sea level, this altitude makes for abundant vegetation and springtime wildflowers.
If you need a place to spend the night, there's even a charming bed and breakfast nearby.
