What better way to spend a Vermont summer day than riding through beautiful landscapes and taking in the fresh Green Mountain air? Grab the gang together or your family, or simply go for a solo-ride along Route 7 in southern Vermont. We have compiled a few great attractions and spots to explore that are right off Vermont Rt. 7. Let's dive in and take a look at this short and beautiful summer drive in Vermont.
This mini road trip stretches from Bennington to Rutland, exploring six attractions that are either on Rt. 7 or right off the highway.
1. Lake Shaftsbury State Park
Begin your journey by stopping at Lake Shaftsbury. This little gem of a state park has been dazzling visitors since 1974 after transitioning from a private campsite to a lovely little state park.
2. Chiselville Covered Bridge
Next, take a small detour off Rt. 7 to slowly cruise through the Chiselville Covered Bridge, a charming and small red covered bridge in the quaint town of Sunderland. The bridge is only about five minutes from Rt. 7. If you are heading north, take exit 3 towards Sunderland.
3. Mount Equinox Skyline Drive
Once getting back on Rt. 7, head to Mount Equinox Skyline Drive. This is perhaps one of the most breathtaking views of Vermont that you can see from inside your car.
4. Lye Brook Falls Trailhead
After being in the car for a while, make a stop at the Lye Brook Falls Trailhead and embark on a 4.7 mile hike to the gorgeous falls.
5. Emerald Lake State Park
The small Emerald Lake is directly adjacent to Route 7, making it a perfect little stop for this mini road trip. Cool off in crisp, fresh, and deep blue water at the Emerald Lake State Park.
6. Brown Covered Bridge
After having cooled off at Emerald Lake State Park, continue going north until a few miles before Rutland. Once you've reached the town of Clarendon, take a right on N. Shrewsbury Rd. A few miles away, you'll find the historic Brown Covered Bridge, one of Vermont's many darling covered bridges.
