The Morgan line dates back to 1789 when Justin Morgan acquired a stallion he named Figure.
Figure was a remarkably athletic stallion who was highly sought after as a breeding horse. His genetics were unusually strong and he produced offspring with much of his remarkable qualities.
You'll find a statue of Figure standing in front of the magnificent barn.
So how did this farm come to be what we can see today?
A wealthy philanthropist named Colonel Joseph Battell began breeding Morgans in the late 1870s. He had a keen interest in preserving America's first breed of horse and saved the Morgan from extinction.
Battell built this showpiece barn to house his world-class collection of Morgans in the 1870's. He wanted the line to continue and deeded the farm to the U.S. government in 1907.
The site played an important role in U.S. history, acting as a Cavalry remount station until 1951.
In 1951, the U.S. Government gave the farm to the University of Vermont.
UVM has used this farm for training and a world-class educational experience.
Did you know that The UVM "government" line of Morgan Horse is considered one of the best in the world?
The economic impact of horses in Vermont is more than $27 million per year. This makes it the second largest agricultural industry!
