Wyoming in the winter is something magical, and it's easy to understand why we live here year-round, despite the frigid temperatures and brutal wind. When you're looking to truly experience some wintertime magic, head west, towards the mighty Teton mountains. Here, you'll find Jackson - where a winter day is a day in paradise.
In the wintertime, the Tetons are absolutely stunning. Fresh snow, majestic wildlife, and Wyoming's perfect winter village turn Jackson Hole into paradise.
One of Wyoming's top destinations is known for gourmet restaurants, welcoming locals, unique boutiques and shops, as well as some of the best winter recreation around.
The town of Jackson is at the center of it all. While this gorgeous village is home to 10,000 people, it never loses its small town charm.
Downtown Jackson is one of the most walkable towns in the West. You'll find local shops and stores selling everything from warm mountain clothing to homemade gourmet treats, and you'll love the people you meet along the way.
Throughout the holidays, Jackson Town Square is all decked out in Christmas lights, and the famous elk antler arch is bright enough to see for blocks.
It's truly a sight to see the town decked out for the holidays! Christmas is a wonderful time to visit Jackson.
While Jackson is known for being one of Wyoming's most expensive places to live, visiting doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. There are plenty of affordable motels and lodges.
If you can get away during the week, you'll save lots on lodging. If not, though, shop around! While there are certainly expensive, luxury resorts in town, it's not impossible to find a nice place to stay within any budget.
Jackson is home to Wyoming's famous Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, which was built in the late 1800s and has been many different businesses over the years.
It opened as a bar in the 1930s, and never looked back. You'll find a menu of bar bites and a drink list that is sure to please anyone in your party. Really, though, the crowd makes this place absolutely unforgettable!
Just outside of town, you'll find three exciting, family-friendly ski resorts.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King Mountain are in Jackson itself, and the famous Grand Targhee is just an hour outside of town, nestled up against Grand Teton itself.
Anyone who loves snow will find the mountains around Jackson to be a winter wonderland!
There are plenty of opportunites for skiing, tubing, snowboarding, fat biking, and snowmobiling in some of the country's most pristine mountain areas.
Wildlife lovers will fall in love with Jackson, too. The National Elk Refuge is a short trek from downtown.
While the drive is less than 5 minutes from the center of town, if the weather is nice, it's a beautiful bike ride to take!
Take a sleigh ride to see the Elk Refuge at its most majestic! Your guide will teach you all about these incredible gentle giants.
If you've (somehow) never heard an elk bugle, be prepared to laugh at the impressive and dissonant sounds these guys make!
Jackson, Wyoming gets a lot of flack from Wyomingites, but if you can see past your local bias, you'll realize that it truly is a treasure of a town.
Sure, it might not be as wild as the rest of the state, and the (extremely classy!) restaurants are a lot different than our typical local saloons, but that's one thing that makes Jackson truly special. It's not often that you can take a trip to an entirely different world without ever leaving your home state!
Does a piece of your heart belong in Jackson, Wyoming? Mine, too! I'll never forget my first visit - the sight of town was a welcome relief after a long road trip across the state. Where's your favorite winter destination in Wyoming?
